Academic offer

Mercia Collegiate Sixth Form offers a rigorous and ambitious academic experience for scholars who are committed to excellence. Most scholars study four A Levels, building deep subject knowledge alongside strong academic habits and intellectual confidence. Our distinctive Professional School Curriculum ensures learning extends beyond the classroom, enabling scholars to engage with advanced concepts and develop a clear understanding of their future pathways.

Our offer is deliberately challenging and designed for those who are willing to work hard, think deeply and push themselves to achieve their full potential. It is more than subject based, it is experience based, preparing scholars to stand out in competitive university applications and future careers.

Teaching and learning

Teaching at Mercia Collegiate Sixth Form is explicit, academic, and rooted in strong subject expertise. Lessons are challenging and carefully structured to develop deep understanding, with teachers leading knowledge acquisition through explanation, questioning, discussion, and seminar style learning.

Scholars are expected to prepare thoroughly, engage actively and think critically. Through lectures, independent study and wider reading, they move beyond the specification and develop the intellectual independence required for university. Small class sizes and expert teachers ensure every scholar is known, supported and consistently challenged to achieve exceptional outcomes.

School day and support

The school day is deliberately structured to maximise learning and academic progress. Scholars attend from 8:20am to 5:00pm, with a 3:45pm finish on Fridays. This extended day allows time for lessons, structured study, super curricular learning and enrichment within a purposeful environment.

Scholars typically have five hours of teaching per subject each week, alongside timetabled independent and collaborative study. Professional School time is built into each day, providing academic guidance and pastoral support. This structure ensures scholars are fully immersed in their studies and develop the discipline and independence required for success at the highest level.

Professional schools

All scholars are part of one of our Professional Schools. Each school is led by subject experts who provide specialist teaching, guidance and insight into competitive university courses and professional pathways.

Through a bespoke Professional School Curriculum, scholars engage with super curricular content, wider reading and application preparation linked to their chosen field. This ensures they develop not only academic excellence, but also the knowledge and understanding needed to succeed in highly competitive admissions processes.

Our uniform is aimed at giving scholars a professional and purposeful outlook, reducing bullying by removing expensive branded items, and giving a sense of community and belonging. All scholars must wear clean, crisp uniform every day. Parents will be contacted if this is not the case.
