Who manages admissions

All admissions for Years 7 to 11 are managed by Sheffield City Council. This includes applications made during the normal admissions round and in-year applications.

Our approach to admissions

We welcome applications from families across the south-west of Sheffield. Mercia School is non-selective and serves a wide catchment area. Families often consider us alongside other secondary schools in this part of the city.

We encourage all parents and carers to explore the school’s ethos carefully before applying. Visits to the school are welcomed, particularly for in-year applications or applications outside the usual admissions cycle.

Open events

Prospective families are strongly encouraged to attend our open events in October. These events offer essential information about our culture, expectations and curriculum, presented in an open and honest format to support informed decision-making.

Expectations and ethos

Mercia School has a traditional and highly structured ethos. We ask parents and carers to choose the school as their first preference only if they fully support our values and expectations. This is not a convenience choice and the school’s culture will not be adjusted to individual preference.

Pupils learn in calm, well-behaved classes taught by subject experts who stretch and challenge all pupils, regardless of starting point. It is important that families are committed to this approach so that pupils can thrive.
