Are we right for you?

Our school is different. We believe in discipline, teachers as experts and total honesty as professionals.

We want applications from individuals who are eager to learn and adapt, and don’t shy away from feedback, but act on it.

The list below should help you to decide if Mercia School is right for you.

Our curriculum is ambitious, carefully designed and focused on securing deep knowledge. Reading, literacy and oracy sit at the heart of our approach because they enable pupils to access and excel in every subject. Lessons are taught directly and with precision, with pupils seated in rows to support clear explanation and strong focus. Committing key knowledge to memory forms an important part of our work, helping pupils develop confidence and long-term understanding.

Teachers plan with great care so that all pupils learn well, regardless of their starting point. Where additional support is needed, Curriculum Leaders, the SENCO and senior staff design targeted interventions that enable pupils to remain in lessons, thrive, and make meaningful progress.

Feedback is delivered from the front so that common misconceptions can be addressed swiftly and effectively. We value every second of learning time and expect pupils to give their full attention. This creates a purposeful environment where excellent teaching can flourish and staff are supported to make the greatest possible impact.

Professional development begins from the moment a teacher is appointed. New colleagues are supported to understand our approach through a carefully selected programme of reading and preparatory meetings that ensure they feel confident and well prepared for life at Mercia School.

In September, all new teachers take part in our Inauguration Week. This structured transition period introduces staff to the traditional teaching style we use, with senior teachers providing constructive, supportive feedback so that everyone makes a strong start.

Before the school year begins, new staff receive two full days of intensive CPD, followed by additional training during Inauguration. Ongoing development continues throughout a teacher’s time at Mercia School. Our weekly CPD session, known as Deliberate Practice, gives staff the opportunity to rehearse techniques, refine their craft, and strengthen their impact in the classroom.

At Mercia School, teachers are deeply committed to the success of every pupil. We know that children thrive when expectations are exceptionally high, clearly communicated, and consistently applied. Staff maintain rigorous standards for behaviour, attitudes, and personal responsibility, supported by clear rules and routines that all pupils are expected to follow.

These expectations may seem demanding, but when applied consistently and fairly, they foster excellent behaviour, high levels of compliance, and a safe, inspiring learning environment. At Mercia, we do not accept poor behaviour, and we value staff who understand the importance of holding pupils to account while also building strong, respectful relationships. Kindness, tolerance, and recognition of pupil achievements are central to our culture, ensuring the school is a warm, safe, and supportive place for all.

To reinforce this culture from the outset, we meet every family individually in the summer before pupils start in September. These meetings set clear expectations and foster a positive partnership between home and school, helping families understand and support our approach. Staff see first-hand how this consistency and clarity transforms pupil engagement and achievement.

We understand that teaching is one of the most rewarding and exhilarating professions, but it can also be exhausting. To make sure our staff do not burnout, we focus on feedback not marking, do not set homework and ban meaningless displays. Meetings are scheduled only when essential, respecting the time and energy of our staff.

By reducing unnecessary pressures, we help teachers maintain a healthy, sustainable balance between school and home life. This allows our staff to give their best in the classroom while staying energised and motivated over the long term.

At Mercia School, we have created a calm, warm, and highly supportive culture. Pupils feel safe and secure, teachers can focus on their teaching, and senior leaders lead with common sense and compassion. We value efficiency and ensure that time is maximised for both professional development and pupil achievement. This creates an incredibly happy school environment, where staff are kind to one another, honesty is embedded in our culture, and mutual support underpins everything we do.

As a member of Mercia staff, you will be invited to contribute to our Elective Programme. This offers pupils opportunities to showcase their creativity and engage in enriching activities that broaden their minds. We strongly promote the Arts, creative subjects, and sport, alongside a broad and inspiring curriculum. Our staff play a key role in supporting and delivering these opportunities, helping to ensure every pupil thrives both academically and personally.
